"I was a little unsure if I would like working in a hospital setting, but this has confirmed my desire to pursue a master of health administration degree," said Andrea Gallagher, as her graduation day approached. Gallagher, who graduated in May 2011 with a degree in public health, gained valuable experience through her public service internship during the spring of her final year. She collected data in the neonatal intensive care unit at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans.

The research project focused on investigating the use of breast milk to swab the mouths of premature infants on mechanical ventilators as a method of oral hygiene, as opposed to traditional methods that use saline.

More Tulane students than ever are participating in the public service internship program, which is an option for completing the second tier of the Tulane graduation requirement.
